Circle of Security in the Classroom

Circle of Security is a professional learning series designed to help educators and early care professionals bring attachment awareness into the classroom and day care settings. The program provides educators with a kind of ‘road map’ for understanding the mechanics of childhood attachment as well as identifying how attachment needs are expressed through behaviour. Particular emphasis is placed upon enhancing understanding of children’s relational and emotional needs, and developing educators’ appreciation of the role they play as substitute attachment figures in the lives of children in their care. This greatly improves educators’ ability to create a nurturing and secure environment for children, which supports overall child wellbeing and is key to a number of short and long term developmental and educational outcomes. The program has also been linked to a number of positive outcomes for educators including improved job satisfaction and increased staff retention.

Recognise

Recognise how attachment needs are expressed through behaviour and may miscue adults.

What You’ll Learn

Understand

Understand how attachment security is linked to exploration and learning in the classroom.

Program Format

The program is a reflective learning series that runs over 9 weeks (1 x 1.5 hour sessions each week). It combines psychoeducation and self-reflection, and provides a framework for educators to reflect on their own attachment experiences and recognise how these may influence how they understand and interact with children.

This is an interactive learning series and must be attended live.

As each session builds on content covered in previous weeks, it is recommended that participants attend every session, and make arrangements to ‘catch up’ on any content missed before the next session.

Those who expect to miss more than two sessions are advised to enrol in a later course.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the series, educators will be able to:

  • Identify the basic attachment needs of children.

  • Understand how attachment security is linked to exploration and learning in the classroom.

  • Understand how secure attachment is linked to healthy development and child well-being.

  • Appreciate their role as a substitute attachment figure and how this influences both short and long term outcomes of children in their care.

  • Recognise how attachment needs are expressed through behaviour and may miscue adults.

  • Identify how to effectively respond in ways that promote a model of secure attachment.

  • Reflect on practical and personal barriers to meeting children’s attachment needs.
