Depression

Feeling down at times is a normal part of life; however if you’re feeling down or hopeless on a regular basis, you could be dealing with depression. Either way, whether you’re suffering with a serious mental health condition, or just in a rut, then therapy can help. Often, those who seek treatment will experience some relief within a few weeks.

Anxiety

Stressed? Worried? Avoiding certain events or situations? Anxiety comes in many forms but, if you’re feeling like your tendency to worry is interfering with everyday life, then it’s a good idea to seek support. Anxiety is the most common mental health issue in Australia but there is help out there. The sooner you get support, the more likely you are to recover.

Grief & Loss

Grief and loss are a part of life’s journey. At some point, all of us will experience grief over losing a loved one, a job, a friendship, our independence, or maybe even our plans for the future. However, while grief is an entirely normal human experience, often there are limited social narratives about how grief should look, which can be very unhelpful to the one grieving. This can leave them feeling invalidated, isolated, angry, and stuck. If this sounds like you, then talking to a professional can help immensely.

Self-Esteem

Poor self-esteem usually develops as a result of childhood experience. Because children receive hundreds of behaviour corrections over the course of childhood, this can sometimes lead to the belief that “I’m not okay”, which can persist into adulthood. In therapy, the relationship between you and your therapist is based on acceptance and compassion rather than judgement and correction. This is what we call a corrective emotional experience, which gives rise to a brand new idea: “maybe there’s nothing wrong with me after all”.

Difficult Childhood

There no such thing as a perfect childhood, but some of us had to grow up with parents who were angry, hyper-critical, selfish, unpredictable, or maybe even terrifying. This of course can have a profound effect upon ones functioning well into adulthood, whereby problems with trust, shame, poor self-worth, and poor mental health ensue. If this sounds like you, then please seek help. A good therapist can help you make sense of your past in a way that helps you heal these wounds and move toward calmer and more contented living.

Relationship Stress

All relationships have their ups and downs. Perhaps you’re just going through a rough patch or maybe you’re trying to answer bigger questions about whether or not you and your partner are compatible. Or perhaps you’re already separated and struggling to move on. If this is you, therapy can help by providing you with an accepting, non-judgemental space for you sort through your feelings and move forward.

Stress & Adjustment

Job loss, relationships, moving, starting or finishing school, getting married, parenting, or falling seriously ill… there is any number of life events that can lead to stress or problems adjusting. Speaking with a therapist can not only help relieve the stress, but it can also help with feelings of being trapped and alone. Together we can help you get to the root of the problem and find ways to deal with it.

Weight Loss

If you want to lose weight, dieting isn’t the answer. The messages from the diet industry are unhelpful, potentially damaging, and just plain wrong. Studies show that, of those who do manage to lose weight through dieting, 80-95% will regain the weight and more within 2-5 years. There are a number of reasons for this but the main thing you need to know is that the problem isn’t you. Talking with a psychologist can help you take a different approach, whereby you can enjoy a healthy relationship with food and develop habits that lead to sustained weight loss.

Parenting the Shy Child

All children have different temperaments, but there’s no question that parenting a shy child has some unique challenges. Not everyone gets what it’s like to repeatedly show up to kids activities only to watch everyone else’s kids happily join in while yours clings to you like a barnacle. Its tricky terrain that can leave you doubting yourself as a parent. The main thing you need to know is that it’s not anything you’ve done; it’s just your child’s natural temperament. But if you need some help navigating the issue, or would just like to talk to someone who gets it, then please get in touch.

Gentle Parenting Support

Parenting is hard no matter how you do it, but gentle parents can face a few extra challenges. Perhaps you’re facing pressure to do things the more ‘traditional’ way, or perhaps you find yourself the ‘odd one out’ in parenting circles. Maybe you’re struggling with how to handle certain situations in the absence of a suitable role model, or perhaps parenthood has brought up some ‘stuff’ from your own childhood that troubles you. Whatever it is, talking with a psychologist who can support you in your values can help a great deal.
