Circle of Security in the Classroom

“Where other programs are focused on changing children’s behaviour, Circle of Security offers a fresh way to look at this.

Behaviour is communication.

Suddenly, the task is not to simply change behaviour. The task is to hear and respond to the message.”

Circle of Security was originally developed for parents, but now there is a version that takes into account the demanding world of educators.

Circle of Security Classroom is a professional learning series designed to help educators and early care professionals bring attachment awareness into the classroom and early care settings.

The program provides educators with a kind of ‘road map’ for understanding children’s attachment needs and how those needs are expressed through behaviour. This greatly improves educators’ ability to build quality relationships and create a nurturing and secure environment for children.

This is an evidence based program that facilitates a number of positive outcomes including improved learning and developmental outcomes for children, and increased job satisfaction for educators

What You’ll Learn

Recognise

Recognise how attachment needs are expressed through behaviour and may miscue adults.

Understand

Understand how attachment security is linked to exploration and learning in the classroom.

Reflect

Reflect on practical and personal barriers to meeting children’s attachment needs.

Program Format

The program is a reflective learning series that runs over 9 weeks (1 x 1.5 hour sessions each week). It combines psychoeducation and self-reflection, and provides a framework for educators to reflect on their own attachment experiences and recognise how these may influence how they understand and interact with children.

This is an interactive learning series and must be attended live.

As each session builds on content covered in previous weeks, it is recommended that participants attend every session, and make arrangements to ‘catch up’ on any content missed before the next session.

Those who expect to miss more than two sessions are advised to enrol in a later course.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the series, educators will be able to:

  • Identify the basic attachment needs of children.

  • Understand how attachment security is linked to exploration and learning in the classroom.

  • Understand how secure attachment is linked to healthy development and child well-being.

  • Appreciate their role as a substitute attachment figure and how this influences both short and long term outcomes of children in their care.

  • Recognise how attachment needs are expressed through behaviour and may miscue adults.

  • Identify how to effectively respond in ways that promote a model of secure attachment.

  • Reflect on practical and personal barriers to meeting children’s attachment needs.
